Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
