Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these treatments should be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
