Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
