Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to sell a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – following McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake in the region of 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who each also own a third of the company.

An official representative said: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The governance of Mercedes F1 will remain unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Valuation Growth

The deal signifies a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos acquired its share for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in valuations of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630 million (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

It is Pitt's most successful film and the most successful sports film to date.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are second in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a unprecedented eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
